FAQs

WHAT IS "27" ?

“27” is an independently-produced feature-length documentary, 80+ minutes long, about the unique opera culture that exists in Parma, Italy and its strong connection to the 27 works of Giuseppe Verdi. It is being prepared to coincide with the Verdi Bicentennial in 2013. “27” will be in Italian with English subtitles; some sequences are in English.

WHO IS CREATING "27" ?

I have been producing “27” independently for the past two years. The idea was an extension of my three published feature articles on the subject, which appeared in OPERA NEWS. For all filming logistics and technical matters, the services of an excellent production company out of Rome were engaged, MaGa Production, which has created numerous documentaries about the performing arts for RAI-TV and MEDIASET, etc. [www.magaproduction.it]

HOW IS "27" FUNDED ?

To date, the completed first Phase of this project (shooting in Parma) was entirely self-funded. “27” is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas whose 501(c)3 designation makes “27” eligible to receive tax-deductible donations. We are now moving forward with a vigorous campaign to generate funds from crowd-sourcing sites, individual donors large and small and by applying to grants from numerous foundations. WHAT HAS BEEN FILMED SO FAR FOR "27" ?

Over 100 hours of footage was shot over two consecutive Octobers (2011 and 2012) in and around Parma during its Festival Verdi. The themes, subjects and sequences are described in the other pages and links of this website. In addition, permission pending, we hope to include other sources such as archival footage, rare home movie footage, “quoted” clips from feature films [e.g., ”Senso”] and several scenes from an extraordinary “lost” 1963 TV documentary on the staging of a Verdi opera at the Teatro Regio.

HOW MUCH MONEY IS NEEDED TO COMPLETE "27" ?

This project is entering its most artistically critical and costliest phase during which all that footage will be skillfully edited down to feature length. For this, I am engaging the services of a superb editor, Doug Rossini, whose work I have admired in several documentaries. A reasonable estimate for editing costs runs about $30,000 - $35,000. Considering expenses incurred so far for the filming and other expenses yet to be incurred the total cost is expected to be around - $85,000.

WHERE DO YOU INTEND TO PRESENT "27" ?

In October, I gave a 90-minute lecture at the Teatro Regio in their magnificent Ridotto space, lecturing and showing extended scenes from the film-in-progress as part of the 2012 Festival Verdi. Well-attended and well-received, this was a huge honor and a sort of validation for this project from the very community the film presents. Two days later I gave a similar presentation at the University of Parma. I am on track to complete “27” to coincide with Verdi’s worldwide bicentennial celebrations, during which I plan to present the completed film at music festivals, opera houses, educational and cultural institutions. As I reach out to these groups with my Promotional Reel, much interest is being generated.

ARE YOU SEEKING COMMERCIAL INVESTORS FOR "27" ?

Not at this time, though I am always open to any such discussion. People who contribute to “27” at this time must do so with the understanding that they are underwriting an artistic and cultural effort of significant importance (described in the Mission Statement), and will receive the tax benefits thereof -- rather than as an investment for which they expect a return or profit. I am seeking funds at this time to prepare “27” for completion and make “27” the best film possible!

VIVA VERDI !!!!
